Australian Cockroaches in Florida

Australian cockroaches are the most common outdoor roach species here in Florida, thriving in our area’s warm climate. It’s easy to mistake them for American cockroaches, but these roaches are slightly smaller. Despite what their name suggests, Australian cockroaches aren’t native to Australia. They actually came from Africa and were introduced to Australia, among other parts of the world.

These pests are peridomestic, meaning they tend to live outdoors rather than indoors. Australian roaches have a knack for finding their way indoors, seeking food and shelter, which isn’t exactly good news for homeowners.

Australian Cockroach Habitat

Australian cockroaches prefer warmer climates and don’t fare well in cold conditions. You’ll often find them hanging out around buildings and homes, especially in areas that offer plenty of moisture, like under tree bark, in firewood piles, or even in your garden’s mulch.

These pests have a particular fondness for greenhouses, where there is plenty of moisture and plants. They also prefer water pipes, sinks, toilets, and even cupboards.

Australian Cockroach Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Australian cockroaches aren’t directly harmful since they don’t have venom and aren’t aggressive. Roach excrement and saliva are unsanitary and can contaminate food items, spreading pathogens (including Salmonella) and allergens.

For individuals with insect allergies, these cockroaches can be a real health hazard. Their presence can trigger allergic reactions, leading to difficulty breathing, itchy rashes, and swelling in the throat. Australian cockroaches are excellent flyers, and can effortlessly move between trees and homes – which makes controlling their population all the more challenging.
