How to Keep Your South Florida Home Safe From Mosquitoes This Summer
Living in South Florida is a dream come true. The beaches are beautiful, and the weather is great throughout the year. But it can get hot and humid, which makes the environment perfect for breeding mosquitoes. If you can’t sit outside and enjoy a sunset without getting bitten up, you probably want to know how to get rid of those pesky Florida mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes in Florida
South Florida mosquitoes, especially those in Boca Raton, are a nuisance. They’re aggressive, they suck your blood, and they cause itchy reactions. Unfortunately, there are 80 different species of mosquitoes in Florida. They all have distinctive features, but when one is biting you, do you really care what kind it is?
You can recognize any mosquito by its elongated body, wings, and long, black legs. Their long nose, or proboscis, is what they use to suck your blood, leaving you with an uncomfortably itchy welt.
Does Florida Have a Mosquito Season?
Mosquitoes are abundantly annoying during June, July, and August. However, because the weather is so warm in Florida, the pests can be out throughout the year. The height of the season may range from April to October.
Mosquitoes are attracted to moisture and water. That’s why they seem to come out of hiding in humid weather or after heavy rain. Seasons with more precipitation, such as early summer, see the most mosquitoes.
These insects don’t like to be out in the hot sun. Therefore, they tend to seek shade during the middle of the day, and they don’t swarm around your face and body. In the early morning and at night, though, mosquitoes come out of hiding and buzz irritatingly around you.
You can get bitten by a mosquito at any time of day. But you’re less likely to have to deal with the suckers at midday or in areas of bright sun. If you’re in the forest or a shady area, you’ll be in the mosquitoes’ territory.
How Can You Deal with Mosquitoes?
Many people serve up the perfect environment for mosquitoes without even realizing it. If you have standing water anywhere in your home or property, mosquitoes will seek it out. That means that if your drains in the bathroom are clogged, or you have half-filled glasses of water around your house, they can serve as breeding areas if the bugs get in your house.
Outdoors, look for areas of standing water. The kiddie pool and birdbath are obvious culprits. But you should make sure that water doesn’t collect in other spots, such as buckets, lawn tools, old tires, tree holes, or planters.
Clear out your gutters and drains too. Mosquito eggs turn into nymphs within four days of being laid. That means that you’ll have lots of the pests in your yard if you wait to clean out standing water after a rain.
You can also take precautions by putting screens on the doors and windows to your house. Use fans outside when you’re entertaining so that the flying insects aren’t stable enough to land on you. Use bug spray and consider wearing clothing that covers your skin as much as possible when you’re outdoors.
